Which do you feel is the superior sporting sex. Endurance wise i believe the human equvilant sees females as supieror to men, however women are very rarely able to compete with the strength of a male. However men are rarely able to compete with the cunning or determination of females. Male dogs were pitted against females, Bitches run against dogs at the greyhound track. I personally loved the brute strength of my dog but really admire the finer attributes of a bitch. Just wondered on your thoughts.

Bitches all the way as far as ' sporting ' sex go for me. I'm my experience they concentrate more and are much less complicated - They mature quicker mentally and are more comfortable about being instructed and controlled.
I personally don't think that you will never see the true temperament and potential of a female until she has had a litter, they gain a confidence, steadiness and maturity that will only come from bringing up youngsters - BUT THIS IS NOT A REASON TO BREED I DON'T WANT TO ENCOURAGE ANYONE?!? it is just an observation.
But i am closer to my boys i will always prefer a dog - This is probably why i find the girls 'work ' better??

I know my dog, once fixed on something could concentrate on nothing else and sometimes you dont wont your dog to think about anything else but the job in hand, true i couldn't control him though, he was just point and shot. I think bitches may think more but im not sure about concentration. Got to say i think for now i agree with most of what you have said Jess but theres not much thinking required for any of todays athletic events, maybe more so with field work.

Having just got a dog for the first time after only having owned bitches before I would say that the bitches are easier to train and more eager to please but they don't have the grit that I've seen from my boy. When he damaged his elbow and was clearly in alot of pain he still carried on digging the hole that he'd started the day before...mental! Macy is very tough and she's not to be messed with but she doesn't have the same do or die attitude that Sonny has. Macy's brother Bob was also similar to Sonny in that he was tougher than is sensible so I'm not sure it's down to different breeding but that's just my experience, I'm sure other dogs will be different.
Dogs also tend to be stronger but bitches usually have a slighter frame which gives them better wind so it's horses for coarses.

The males are good up until they get a hormone surge about 2 years I'd say?....Then that will either make or break it. If you can handle a very drivey, hard going, headstrong male at this age, in my experience you will make him and have a good dog......If not he will never have respect for you and you will have a life of living with and uncontrollable dog. These are the best dogs but the hardest dogs to handle and bring up.
For an easy ride the bitches are the best nothing on this plant would distract my females....
I bet if a bitch coming into season came running around any male, no matter how focused you may think he is you would loose him, that is the power of hormones.... well testosterone.
You have to remember i am talking from a different view as we often run our dogs together, we see them as a more pack mentality. What i have seen is that the strongest most powerful and athletic males are the ones that have the highest levels of testosterone, as they will be the ones who will be top on the breeding list. The females will give him this hormone boost without even realising.....This in turn means they are much more easily distracted - Just a whiff and they will be more fixed on competing with every other male in the vicinity than any interest in what you want them to do, i would imagine that would account for and field work as well as athletic events. What we see by keeping our dogs so close is much more exaggerated behavior than that of dogs kept as pairs or individulary, but i think it is there with all males. The farmer up the lane keeps gun dogs - I have been up and watched him work them on a number of occasions and have spoken to him about this a number of times - He said the same his best dogs are bitches.... Just the other day i was watching him train a 2 and half year old male retriever, this dog was incredible his obedience was fantastic i was so impressed.... Two days later that same male was out on a shoot across the field from our kennels prob half a mile away.... later ifound him sat outside our kennels pacing up and down, our girls are all in season!!! LOL men hey!?!!

I think there is two sides to this discussion.
1) Which sex is easier to train and keep focuse etc. 2) Which sex do perform better in a pure task.
As many of you say femals are easier to train and to keep focuse on the task they are given. And i do belive the same from my exparians. The females are just so much more intrested you as a leader etc while the males is a bit more "on their own".
But when it comes to the task it self, lets say what sex can pull the most weights or what sex would probably run a 100m faster. Then i would guess that males would be able to get slightly stronger withing the same waight then a female would. Simply as males builds more mucle vs same activity(i assume this goes for dogs aswell) So as of weight pulling i would assume a male to perform better on top motivation. While a female normaly would weight a bit less then a male and probably run a 100m faster then a male. But thats just my idea there..
I guess it comes down to that you need the motivation and focuse, and if you do have that then other stats like what i mention come into play but overall i think i personaly would pref a female over a male if i needed to chose one.

I like this discussion! This has made me look at my dogs and bitches, i agree with you xtobbenx that there is two sides.
Personally i think its down to the each individual dog - Take Poppy she is stronger than most males that i have seen pound for pound, and prob more muscular? At a glance particularly from her back end you would think she was a male, but she is unusually muscular and strong for a bitch and has yet to be matched on the running by male or female. Then you have the complete opposite our Rosa, she is very 'feminine' in her appearance and structure, although maybe not phsically stronger than Billy - her litter bro, her mental strength is so much better and will out preform him every time.
For me just comes back to ever illusive 'Total package' - I think you can genralise but when you have a great dog sex doesn't come into it - Bit like the X-Factor!! LOL

I think you guys prove Jessica her points about permanent sexdrive in males and the consequences that has got on concentration and functioning.
i myself must honestly admit that i prefer females!
for dogs i prefer them hot to handle boy's and bitches like my molly the bitches to me have not proven better.
