it is an excellent type of exercise, its also good for dogs who are recovering from leg/shoulder/hip injuries and also pregnant dogs, its a non stress no impact exercise so cant cause any damage at all but works all the muscles.

its what the dogs like really misty dont like bein wet but lliek i say only goes in to clean off shes swam a bit before but turned round got out. i must say tho if its something you want to do with your dogs best to find a place with a hydrotherapy pool that allow animals to use it, it works out deer but is a safer way too do it the ocean rivers and what have you are unpredictable a couple and there dogs drown the other day its been all over the news.

i dont meen to scare anyone but a pal of mines stafford drowned in the sea at hastings a few years back. better of using a lake if you have one near by.and be ready to jump in if anything happens.

We go to hydrotherapy occasionally its brilliant - The therapist said 5mins of swimming it was the equivalent to 5 miles walk - I have never in my life seen Poppy knacked but she was exhausted - only for a few mins .... but was the most i have ever seen her worked! and the best part was there was no stress on her joints.

Macy swims loads in the summer, she's got a bad shoulder so this is the only really intense exercise she gets. It is about four times more intense than running (for the human at least) as a human can swim 100m in roughly the same time as it takes to run 400m, it's probably even more intense on that basis for staffords. Staffords aren't built for swimming but Macy is pretty good and even dives under to get stuff, she'll even swim out after swans!
It's important to rememeber that water temperature increases much slower than air temps so I don't let her swim until roughly this time of year, it may be a warm March day but stick your hand in the water...much less warm.

Our springer will swim in a puddle if you let him, you can't keep him out of water he's a 12 year old pup. BUT Alfie our staff will only wash his plums and no more, he won't take the hint or copy the springer, the big tart.
