Some dogs just dont enjoy certain things and wont do it, you can try baiting them using treats and alot of praise if they do it which will help.

Fetch and cycling are the best ways imo to build stamina and get a truly fit dog, not one that just looks good and ripped.

it may be a crank of mine, but the best dogs i ever had all gave 100% on the spring pole and many of the not so good ones wouldn't go near the spring pole!!! this is one of the methods i use to determine a good stafford. another test is that a stafford should be fearless but friendly with people and should not show submission to cats or dogs.

You can use raw meat but Pig's heads are pretty tough, cost virtually nothing (possibly free) and last a while.

pigs heads def work coco was the same i tried alsort she will hang from trees all day but would not entertain the spring pole but she will do any thing for a stick so i cut a bike tyre tide a knot in it and threw it like a stick for a few days then attached it to a long rope and threw it again she picked it up we played tug again did this for a few days then did it in garden when she was tuggin it i attached the rope to the spring she goes on it most times now still have to throw it first some times hope this helps and try doing it as the first exercise before you walk atb

as far as the spring pole goes, i have had Stafford pups where i wasn't sure weather they would work on the spring pole or not and none of them did, most wouldn't go near it and others gave only a half hearted attempt and three other pups that i was convinced would work on the spring pole fought it as though their life depended on it!!! i would drape food over their noses and throw some on the floor but they wouldn't release and after an hours work would have to be broken off with breaks sticks and thrown into a cage where they would fight like mad to get out! its interesting to note that in captain fitzbarnards book (fighting sports) in a chapter on training fighting dogs regarding the spring pole he stated that " of course you can only work dogs these ways, a cur would soon chuck it"!!! he was also of the opinion that if a dog would work well for one hour he would fight for six!! now I'm not saying he's completely correct in his opinion's but i do believe there is an element of truth to his views and this man had much experience in all types of fighting sports!!! i don't breed for true gameness! but in exchange for that i do require my dogs to have a strong foundation of bulldog tenacity and fearlessness in their nature. I've had dogs that were superb at chasing things like a lure or over the a-frame or even live quarry but when faced with cornered quarry would back off!!! they may hold a title for this or that but they would never be my type of Stafford! and as i said they must have strong bulldog qualities of tenacity and fearlessness in their nature, champion or not! it might be obvious to some that i don't demand the hardest test of my dogs and that maybe true but on the other side of the coin, if they don't reach the standard required then they ain't worth feeding or breeding as far as I'm concerned. i do like a Stafford that will work on the spring pole or tug o war and one who is both tenacious and fearless in their approach and if they are good at chasing quarry be it live or not, then even better. Its not just gameness we stand to lose but if we are not diligent in our endeavors, tenacity and fearlessness may also wane from less carefully bred bull breeds, i.e. dogs bred for show or pet qualities and nothing else. drive, determination, tenacity and fearlessness would be the main four sporting qualities i would look to get in my foundation bitches. j.m.o

it's a practice of mine to let my dogs dictate what they want to play with. my dogs you literally had to force them to hit the springpole and they did it just to satisfy me at the beginning. what i'm trying to say is, some staffords do not like to play with toys, springpole, etc... but still retain the good qualities of a good one. try biking, swimming or something of that nature

Its true not all dogs will play with every piece of equipment you put in front of them.It doesn't nessicarily (mind the spelling LOL) mean they dont posses these qualities that are needed to make a good en.trouble is you can train this way and that way and that way and have gr ch or ch in front but your never gunna know if he is a true bulldog or not.in reality these terms nowadays dont mean alot but just means you have spent alot of time training them for these particular events.Fair play im in no way knocking it but we all know their is only one true test to see if it is what he says it is.Love it or hate it,its true.

i don't think anyone would argue with you on that point Andrew but it just isn't practical for most people who want to live within the law and not see their beloved pets get smashed up. in exchange for that the only other reasonable way to test for tenacity etc is through the athletic events and you can only go by what they achieve within these events and yes there are a few things you can go by away from the athletic scene! i don't think most people are that interested weather their dogs are game in the true sense of the word as they have no way of knowing, instead they just want to know their dogs are more dynamic than their show counterparts. the skill is to try and breed your dogs to have as many of the dynamic traits as possible i.e. tenacity, drive, determination, stamina, strength, activity and agility. most dogs wont have all these traits to the highest level but that remains the aim. one hopes to produce a dog that has all these traits even if we are attempting the impossible! Also i would like to point out is activities like a-frame or tug o war do not require any training as such, its more like the old school in that either a dog has it it or not, its more about natural ability and prey drive and less about a clever trainer.

I totally understand what your saying regarding the law etc...your right 99% of people wouldnt test them this way anyway even if they could.I also know fully what people are trying to do on the athletc scene fair play,it takes alot of time and effort to get a dog up to the top standard im sure,Just at the minute i dont think its the be all and end all, but got to admit I havent attended an event as yet and will be attending a few differrent ones within the next few months to see what the standards are maybe i will have a different opinion then. who knows i may be pleasently supprised im not sure wether i agree with you regarding the tug o war or A-frame comment though! and im not saying you have to be a clever trainer either ;D

Mountain lion vs any bulldog is no easy task and its perfectly legal here in the states. Many game to the core bulldogs had given up after a few minutes rumble with the kittie. what came to my mind: is this type of hunting considered another test of game or beyond? just my opinion

Andrew your right its not the be all and it will never replace the pit on a tit for tat basis but i think most people except the athletics for what it is. it has its pluses and minuses! the point i was making about the tug o war or a-frame is that you can't make or train a dog to be a good one if you don't have the raw ingredients to work with, in other words "you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear! no matter how good the trainer may be. i think as the years roll on, the athletic activities will get better and better and may well come up with a way of stringing them together so as to test stamina and determination better than at present, which seems to be a bit of fun and that maybe where the present weakness lies!

terrier boy i think you misread my comment it was gr ch/ch regarding the athletc events not the pit. id call it one hell of a dog if it can go with a mountin lion id love to see some footage f you have any. I wouldnt call it a fair test would you? but if thats what you do to test em then fair enough ;D fair comments oldetyme nice talking to ya

I know you're not Andrew. I, like you, thought of tenacity differently until I saw a dog(s) trying to dispatch one of this critters. good test and a lot of fun. there's a couple of vids of different breeds hunting cougars, I've even seen dogos struggling to get the job done they were bred for, with even 2 or 3 of'em at the time. may have one or two wild boar hunting but no kitty cat filmed though. I havent tested my dogs on pumas yet but trying to this year or next, nothing concrete as of yet.
