Well, you live and learn.
After putting off getting a shock collar for a long time and contemplating using a spray collar instead I finally bit the bullet and bought a shock collar.
I was put off them by someone I know using it as a torture device on his dog and shocking his dog for fun. I can understand why people have been campaigning to have them banned but I have now discovered just how incredibly effective they are even with the most headstrong dog (Sonny) and with him being such a big, strong dog it had come to the stage where I wasn't able to let him off the lead in case he jumped all over somebody (I was particularly worried about him jumping on children), chased and killed wildlife or livestock or doing what he did a couple of weeks ago and beating up a Spaniel (not badly but it scared the owner and the Spaniel).
I used the shock collar for the first time today (approx £100 delivered). I tried it on myself first because I thought I should know exactly what the feeling was like before I did it to Sonny and it's pretty unpleasant, in fact it hurts like **** on the highest setting. It gave me almost instant control of him, it took a few times for him to get the idea and he ran off after another dog at one point and that required a few shots on the highest setting for him to accept it and of course his good behaviour was rewarded with treats and praise. He now heels, stays and comes back instantly even when he's distracted. I don't think I'll need to shock him very often if at all any more as the collar also has a warning noise and that seems to be very effective on it's own now.
So I take back what I said about them before, if used in the right way and with an emphasis on reward for good behaviour rather than punishment for bad they are a great tool for controlling a headstrong dog. I never needed it on Macy but I do with this nutter and although it's not a nice thing to have to do I'm sure he'd rather have that than be destined for a life of always being on the lead and I now have complete control over him.
I'm a very happy chappy ;D
