hopefully this should be an interesting debate, what are your reasons to breed your dog or bitch,, do you do it for financial gain,do you do it because you want to, for betterment of the breed , i'm sure the list is endless, it will be interesting to see peoples views and why

I have bred one litter and may never do it again after all the ups and downs, but the reason i bred was because i wanted to improve on what i had, but also because i like the bloodline and wanted another dog with the same traits as the parents. It was not done for money as in the end i gave all the pups away for free, vet bills cost me a fortune after brandi had injured 2 of the pups.

I would say most breed for financial reasons when u see the amount of dogs for sale. But if you have a top dog or bitch its good to breed off them and see what they reproduce maybe better, when i bred my patterdales there was nothing better than people ringing and saying how well 1 of offspings are working ,or saying my mate got a dog off you will you be breeding them again. + i didn't think there were many better dogs about at the time.

having kept staffords for over twenty three years continuously, i have only bred one litter and can think of easier ways of making money. i bred that litter to hopefully improve on the next generation and to keep a pup back for myself, infact i ended up keeping three pups back.

I hope to breed my first litter this year. My main reason to start breeding is my interest in the breed. When i like breeding and have a lot of fun doing it, i will continue to breed. These dogs are my hobby, a passion. Not something i want to make money from.

Not something i want to make money from. if done properly you will find it hard to MAKE money on breeding dogs unless you breed your bitch/bitches every season.i have had 2 litters in 21 yrs of owning bullbreeds (both firstly for mine/friends stock)if you add up food and kennels and vet bills and general dog stuff plus buying dogs in, i am well in the red , i may buy 10 british bulldog bitches to make my money back(only joking)

i think generally the type of person who main requisite is to make money are the back street mob who breed dog and bitch who live within a stones throw and have no paper work as they can't be bothered and have no real interest, just wanting to make a quick buck. breeding to make money is a high risk statutory as many complications may arise and prove very expensive, again no problem for the back street mob as they will just explain their on the rock n roll and can't pay, wont pay.

We have had one litter by accident (please see my welcome thread), and its been nothing but expense (esp as we hadnt planned for them) i have no idea how people can make money from breeding unless its not done properly. Althou the dodgy breeder still manage to fill the local papers with staff pups for sale every week?
Its something i will never do again as im still having problems trying to get homes for the pups, lots of offers but not the right people. I know mine are just mutts and oddly bred (rottie x deerhound lurcher) which makes it harder to find the right sort of home for them.

We breed because we love this breed and want to promote and preserve these wonderful companions.

becoming a breeder is easy as the previous reply's are showing staying a breeder is possibly one of the toughest jobs in the world.
As a kid i was never at home i was allway's in our stables we had horses, goats dogs sheep goose pigeons rabbits ducks chickens deers mouflons and all in different types.
the principal of working with animals has been fed to me with a spoon and is a second nature.
in 1989 i had my first Stafford and it fascinated me ever since.
as a proffesional dogtrainer and childhood experience i had a view based on function towards dogs and in 1990 i learned that there was no function for these fighting breeds and without that the breed in fact was doomed to change into something else. And some where along the line of my thinking i choose not to let that happen.
i had my experience in other animals and other dogs i took my education (I went to a school for breeding and taking care of small cattle and pets) and used all knowledge i had in making a breeding plan. which has resulted in Quinlent Staffords today.
i have learned a lot ever since and it where never the dogs that where dissapointing!
Cheers - Marco
