I currently use barbell plates on a chain for lily to train at weight pull. this is on a grass surface. She is pulling 15 kg for 30meter up and down for 10 mins. I wondered if any one does the same method and if they can tell if that is a decent standard of weight or not as i have no comparison Cheers

I think its a case of trial and error mate.watch the dog you will see if its to much or to little.every dog is different as you know. The weight you are using sounds fine...if she is starting to make it look easy just up the distance...slow and steady. What ever she is pulling is going to work her harder than without weight so therefor you are getting the desired effect. Look forward to seeing her some time this year.
cheers Glen.

I agree i am using 8kg only and only make abbey do it 4 or 5 times at 30 feet. I think if a dog can start the cart it will pull it so im going to concentrate on heavy weights over short distance this year. I am using sash weights from windows. before the pups she would pull the tyre 2 or 3 times at the beach over about 60 meters, 2 times a week.

You can use also 2 littre bottle of pop....fill with concrete put a u bolt in the end and let it set. Then cut the plastic away and presto some weight to pull.

i use a dragsled made of iron weigh's 8 kg i can put different weights on it. in total i can add 21 kg i have two dogs that can pull the total package over 25 mtrs both weigh inbetween 17 and 18 kg
i mainly use a kickbike my weight is around 100 kg Molly weigh's about 13kg the distance is 1500 meter Cruel man can go for ten miles no problem and Connemara tell's me to f*ck off and pull it meself unless there is a lure in the game.

I also like the idea of concrete in bottles ;D I have recently started just getting the pups used to the stop starts and pulling with very light weights and im pleased with their progress in such a short space of time. As for the older one shes getting their very slowly but doesnt like the noise of the weight being pulled and gets a bit spooked now and again but hopefully get their in the end with her

when drag pulling my advice would be to pull a lighter weight over a longer distance rather than heavy weight over a shorter distance, you can do both but dont over do it and try to always keep it fun for the dog, if your dog isn't going nuts when you get the harness out, then there could be a problem!!! the trick is for your dog not to notice any increase in weight or distance. personally i prefer to use half dogs body weight over a mile twice a week. always try to make training a positive experience.

i pull daisy 2x a week with a tyre on her walk for about 200m 3x . she seens to cope ok do you think this is to much or not enough im want to concentrate on her pulling this year as it seems to be her thing i dont have a waight pull cart if i am going to take waight pulling up on a seroius level is it importiant to train her with more waight at home she seems to pull well on the day with only the tyre pull training. but i worry she will pull somthing as she puts her heart and sole in it and trys so hard. im not sure what to do next to bring her training to the next level

hi gemma, sounds to me like your doing fine, how old is she? always keep it fun and dont over do it. do you have a proper harness, this is very important! i'm not talking from an experts point of view but more from someone who has made mistakes and now have to go back and start again, if you can avoid cocking things up in the begining, so much the better! good luck, ian.

yes she is in a pulling harness now i made the mistake of pulling her in a coller first so it took a long time to build her confidence in a harness but she is doing well now . She is two years old now and waighs in at around 29 30 lb she has pulled 35x har body waight in a coller and i cant wate to see if she will pull more in her harness but all so un sure of how she will do at a comp as i dont pull lots of heavy waights at home . i want to do the best i can to prepare her for the comps but not over do it she is going to sheffield in april for her first pull under rules and i want to do the best i can to prepare her cheers gem

I've looked at some sledges that they make for athletes to train with but they are really pricy for what they are. got the price back from the metal works, " £3oo" more than three times what i was expecting! however, i asked someone else i know and he has just finnished it for me, and would not take a penny.
