For me, there is an ideal type that could fulfill any purpose, i.e. pit dog, field worker or modern day athlete and this type of dog would also be useful as an outcross for other breeds of working dogs, such as lurchers, ect. Lilly would be an ideal representative of an english bull terrier.

Like you say history is history and we can not pit [ ] are dogs any more but we should still be breeding them to look sim to they did 100 years ago. They make good working dogs and are great at athletic events. There sould be more to a bull terrier than just a show dog if your dog is no good for the show ring then what?but if it was bred with the old more athletic build you could still do something with your dog like field work or agility.I would like to see a 16inch 38/40 pound show staff work in the field all day it just would not last but a 16inch 30 pound dog could I've got one.And also think a lighter built dog makes a better house dog just because of size.
