My dear Bennie (1year old boxer) is the perfect dog until I let him off the leash in Bushy Park. He likes to chase deer and even low flying birds. It gets him tired ok but it needs to stop asap. His recall in the absence of victims is very good but when he sets off the adrenaline and pleasure of the chase makes him deaf to anyone’s commands.
I tried the fetch games ppl advice on the net but he couldn’t care less about chasing a ball.
Has anyone used electric collars? If so does it actually work?
Can anyone suggest other ways to teach him?
I need to have him off the leash in the park as I think he misses out on good times while walking on paths next to me.

I have exactly the same problem with my Bull Terrier and the only thing that's worked is an electric collar. It takes a continuous blast of about 3-4 seconds on the highest setting of a collar designed for working dogs with extreme chase instincts to put him off but it does the job. He has got incredibly high drive and pain threshold and if it works for him I should imagine it would work for any dog as long as you get good contact with the skin. I've written a review in the training equipment section of both the collars I've tried.
I also hear that PAC collars are very good and come with a lifetime gaurantee.

Sorry to have posted without researching first. Admin please remove this if you think necessary.

No of course not, it's always worth asking about a particular problem and getting people's opinion on it. What I wrote may not have covered what you wanted and there may be other approaches that people can recommend and can still do so. All I know is how bloody effective shock collars are when used properly. some say it's cruel but if it's a choice between the dog chasing (and posssibly attacking) a deer, a horse, another dog or getting run over/causing an accident then a small shock is much preferable. If it has one remember to train your dog with the warning buzzer first so that you can use that 99% of the time rather than actually having to shock the dog. Personally I use a verbal command (not just shouting their name, tell them what you want them to do), warning buzzer then shock if both are ignored. For the first time the warning buzzer must be followed by a shock (they will ignore the buzzer anyway) so that the dog can learn the association between buzzer and shock.

If his recall is good he needs work on recall with distractions. Starting with little to no distractions then slowly increasing the temptation. Keep him on a training lead and praise/treat heavily when he gets to you. Start with easy distractions and try to never let him fail (hence the training lead).
I hope this helps......atb Leigh

I personally wouldn't use a collar... you just need to work on your recall. That needs to be in place before you let a dog off. Have you trained him to a whistle?

Hi, I bought a collar but didnt bring myself to use it after testing it on myself.....I'm a softy. I just found other walks in the area
His recall is spot on in the absence if furry animals or deer, but like I said initially, when there's something to chase he seems possessed.
I use a acme 210.5 and he responds very well but not midchase :-))
