I've just started using desiccated liver tablets from Body Fortress, available from Holland and Barrett. This is a replacement for the marmite I've been using which has a high salt content so not ideal.
I'm not 100% sure of the benefits but they contain Iron and vitamins B1 (71% RDA) and B12 (100% RDA) which help with the formation of red blood cells which in turns help the blood to carry oxygen.
The recommended dose for an adult human is 1-3 tablets per day. I have estimated that 1 tablet every other day (or half a tablet a day) is a sensible dose for my 18 kg (40lb) dog. They dissolve well in hot water, which I then add to the dried food that she has, she appears to like the taste and would eat the tablets dry if I let her.
They cost £5.99 for 250 tablets or £9.99 for 500 which equates to around 1p per day at the above stated dose which isn't too bad.
This is of course an experiment at the moment and I don't expect any significant evidence of increased performance but it can't hurt as long as the dose isn't excessive.
Your opinions on this would be welcome...

wouldnt it be easier to add liver to there feeding program?

You could add liver to their food but this is the cheap and easy way of getting the vitamins and minerals that it contains into their food every day.

so how do we work out correct dosage?say for a 50lb dogs and 35lb? It's impossible to say accurately because they are designed for use by people and even the direction for adults is very loose (1-3 tablets per day). If however you consider that the average human male is roughly around 80 kilos (168lbs) then I would say an appropriate dose for a 20 kilo (42lb) dog would be about quarter or less of that, meaning that half a tablet a day would be fine for most dogs around that weight, if the dog was double that weight then maybe one tablet a day would be O.K but it's not an exact science at all and I use that only as a guide to the maximum dose for a dog, it's possible a lower dose would be just as effective.

fair enough Dog, i was just thinking, with many ppl feeding RAW.. Your quite right though I'm sure fresh liver would make an excellent raw food although I don't know a great deal about feeding raw and would leave that to others to give advise on.

i think liver is quite rich correct me if im wrong someone, but shouldnt be given too much if the dogs not used to raw. It may be too rich for them straight off. We can feed both rameses and abbey side by side even with raw Rameses will eat his first and think about going to abbeys but a quick no from me he will wait then when they have both finished they always go check out each others bowl. On the odd accasion abbey finishes first she will dive for rameses bowl and he hasnt protested yet a quick no does not work with her i need to remove her.Greedy cow lol

Anyone still using these tabs?if so did you notice any improvements with them? here is an article i have found:
It is a concentrated form of dried liver, which is extracted from beef liver, powdered and made available in tablet or capsule forms. Desiccated liver is a natural supplement that is used for increased strength, endurance and to build body mass. It is rich in Vitamins A, C, D, and B-Complex, phosphorus, iron, protein, copper and calcium.
What are the benefits of Desiccated liver? •It keeps gums healthy and can be used in the treatment of gum disease •It helps the body to relax and decreases depression symptoms •Prevents stress build-up in the body •Stimulates the production of more red blood cells •Helps to repair and build body tissue •Increases the metabolism and energy •Is used in the treatment of liver disorders •Is used in the treatment of anemia •Increases endurance •Eliminates fatigue •Builds strength •Builds the immune system •Stimulates the appetite •Contributes to bone health •Improves recovery time after exercise It is a source of natural iron and as such an overdose of iron is not likely to occur.
