After a life time of Bull breeds and lurchers I'm considering getting something different, primarily because we plan on spending a lot of time travelling through Europe in a campervan and we have suffered a fair bit of stress with cops due to having Bull breeds with us in the past. Added to this the uncertainty of future BSL and, well, it might well be easier for us to have a wee rest from the Bulls.
Having seen some nice individuals (Maligater's Malinois, for example) I quite fancy a change, and have been thinking of what sort of breeds I might go for.
What would you all go for? My problem is even the non-Bull breeds I like have the stigma of being dangerous(at least in the ignorant eyes of many police officers)eg Dobermann. Might have to get myself that Cavalier King Charles to go with my Papillon after all, eh?!

I would first look at a rottie but the are considerd as dangerous. I would look at breeds that can relax and the malinois are not known to be easy they can "´hard" not the best combo whit a lot of new faces and places.
risenschnauzers are cool. howart is a cool bred to german shepard working lines.
check them out.
sorry if my english is not the best. good luck

I was going to suggest a rottie as they have a very good "personality", but not so good if your looking for a "nice doggy" type dog and I think they are on the BSL list in france.
What about a cross breed? Best of two breeds, but "its just a mutt" in the eyes of most people.

What about a Pharoah Hound? It would enjoy travelling around, like the sunshine and would get on with your other dog. Plus they can really run and have agreat play drive. We have one at the rescue centre at the moment: www.bluecross.org.uk/2566-82357/Sandy.html

Pharoah hounds are fantastic, I had a look at them a while ago and I'd love one although they're quite rare in this country.
Do you know what cross she is?

No - it is very hard to tell. She s very Pharoah-y in everyway really so I imagine the cross in something similar, perhaps a small collie type. I love Pharoahs - did you know they blush! If they got told off or are backing-off they get a blushing affect and thier cheeks go red!

Are you looking for the second dog to be a bit of a guard/deterrent dog, just asking as you mentioned Maligater’s Malinois and Dobermans? If so, this will rule out most terriers, although the Airedale terrier (not a true terrier) was in its history a police/military dog, I’m not sure of their guarding instincts today. Would you want a real guarding dog? Or just a visible deterrent? A real guard dog may bring as many problems as a bull breed. If you’ve the space there are a few large fluffy herding breeds that look nice but make a wrong doer think twice like the Anatolian shepherd dog. Back to the “terrier” there is a dog called the Russian terrier developed as a guard dog for the RED ARMY looks fluffy but! I think they’re bred in Europe with strong guarding instincts I think the UK ones are easier but still need firm guidelines. The blend included the Airedale, the Giant Schnauzer, the Rottweiler, the Newfoundland, the Caucasian Ovcharka and the extinct Moscow Water Dog. May be what you’re looking for? All the best Paul.

If they got told off or are backing-off they get a blushing affect and thier cheeks go red! I read that they blush, they're quite a unusual breed and are virtually free from genetic disease which is astonishing. They look like a running dog but are actually a hound both in name and nature. I saw a video of a pack of them hunting on a rocky hillside and it's an absolute pleasure to watch. I can't seem to find the video now, that's gonna bug me.

Yes - I have ran with one once before - lovely dog she was - bigger than the mix at the centre (the one I linked to in my original post). They are very hound-y in nature - really laid back at home though, and fairly easy to keep. Good looking dogs - sort of like giant bats! Im a massive fan of the Cirneco Dell' Etna too - which is a smaller sleeker version. Lovely dog! Very sweet natured but a real worker!

Patterdale for me too! I had one about 20 years ago. Best 30 quid I ever spent. Heart of a lion, size of a....small dog I guess!lol Would be great size for a campervan too and will alert you to any intruders coming your way. Sometimes a bit too keen to mouth off but great little characters.

She acted fine during the whole thing, although she is to young to hunt yet. Mid next year she will be started proper underground, she is 9 months now. Just put up two pics of her on my facebook, if you go to Lee's, you see me as a friend, add me and I add you. Like to see pics of your monster too!!!!

I'm a big dog fan so I love Bull breeds, Dobermanns, Mastiffs and Rottweilers but I really love the Greyhound too. Not sure if the Grey would be a thought with you having Lurchers before?
