I've recieved conformation tonight that I'll be allowed to run Sonny in a bikejoring event this November. All I have to do is have him assessed on the day to ensure that he's not a danger to any of the other Dogs. All being well though we should be making an attempt against all the Huskies...a bit like the canine equivelant of the Jamaican bobsled team.
The event is over approx 4 miles so I'll be training him for that distance up until then. I'm getting friggin nervous now, mainly because I have people coming to watch. I just hope we can do ourselves justice.

Thanks, all I'm really worried about now is his assessment. He's very good with other Dogs and I'm sure he'll be fine but you never know what he's going to be asked to do in the assessment. I think as long as they don't present him with a Bulldog he'll be alright...He hates Bulldogs!

It will be a cracking challenge , certainly wish you all the best !
Hopefully no bulldogs involved ,
Sonny aint gonna be fazed by a Husky , crack on !

Thanks mate, yep I'm not too worried.
If he works as well as I know he can he will be very competitive. He's putting in some incredible times over five miles. He also has days when all he's interested in is the bloody wildlife (he also has a thing about Swans) and marking every bush so it's going to be a testing day in every sense.

Hope you do well and show its not just huskies that can pull.
I do scootering with my two and often get comments as they arent huskies. Where do you take yours? As the problem i have found is finding somewher with quiet tracks to be able to do a decent distance.

I take him along the tow path of the River Lee which is just near me and goes for miles uninterupted, it's a great place to have next to me. I'm really lucky because there are also a few nature reserves near me because of the old munitions works/firing ranges that used to be around here you can't do anything else with the land, it's a great place for bikejoring.

Thanks people. I'm dying to find out how he stacks up against the rest of the Dogs, there will be Pointer and Pointer crosses competing as well as a few other breeds so It will be good to make a comparison.

Can i ask where you managed to get a harness from? As currently i run them on a weightpull harness as i cant find a sled type harness for dogs their size and shape.

I'm actually using a Manmat harness which is a very simple adjustable design. They do a few types... www.manmat.eu Culpeppers do a couple of types that are similar...the 'walking harness' and the padded harness...Lee and Marek (sporting dog supplies) also do something similar. www.culpeppers.co.uk/catalogue/?cat=harnesses

Thanks John, Sonny's training was coming on really well and he was looking absolutely ripped but we've had a bit of a set back with him splitting one of his pads quite badly. It's going to be a struggle to keep him fit and getting his paw to heal properly with the race less than 4 weeks away so it's a bit of a balancing act at the moment, fingers crossed he'll be O.K.
As for me all I have to do is sit on the saddle and pedal a bit when we come to a hill. The only scary bit is when he sees a Squirrel or a Swan...God he hates Swans! I haven't fallen off yet but if and when I do it's going to have something to do with a Swan.

i'd let him rest for a few days, maybe a week. if he has been well conditioned before, then you will be able to pick up from where you left off with out much difference. You wont improve his fitness while he is un-sound but you could end up making the situation worse! good luck.

I was speaking to a sled Dog racer and he said to clean it, put anti-septic on and superglue some moleskin over it lol! That's what they do and it works really well apparently, well enough for the Dogs to carry on competing in races like the Iditarod.
It's too late to do it now but I'll do it next time.

I've got some Tuff pad and I might use that, I think it's Iodine based. It's a nightmare trying to hold him back because he just wants to run around like a lunatic all the time. He's not enjoying his enforced rest.

hi neil, i was driving a coach in london a couple of months back, past the barracks and i see one of your buddies and he said he knew you, so i said say hello from ian hurley. yeah, i'm well m8, hope you are too. i dont really do anything with the dogs anymore, i've just had my new pup spayed which is a shame in a way as she is the kind of bitch i have been after for so long and would make a great foundation bitch! i was thinking of putting harry in shape one more time but with my new job i dont have so much time. are you doing anything with the dogs!! atb ian.

yeah, i know what you mean m8, its part of the reason i have decided not to go to anymore events. i may attend a few events as a spectator but i dont see the point of spending eight hard weeks training for nothing!!!!! looking back i wish i had got into the hunting thing, i think it would have suited me better. let me know mate when you want to take the dogs out. atb ian.
