The only work i do with my Abbey is heavy but short drag pulls over 5 foot maximum. I concentrate on the starting of the cart as IMO if the dog can start the cart it will usually pull it the distance. Plenty of roadwork too. jmo

well if your dog has the teknik on the cart i would only use cart tranieng 2-4 times a month. the building strenth is the drag training . i walk drag with my dogs, about half the dogs weight for 3-5 km 2-3 times a week and one time heavy shorter distence more weight( the dogs weight).
when i do cart traning i make the dog pull half of his max about 8-12 times. the last 2 with light weight so the dog thinks he is king he he .
this works for me
This is short version

shakka... that sounds good to me, when my dogs have drag pulled heavy weights you can really see them making the effort in the first 5ft and if they can start a heavy dead weight and pull it 5ft then they will pull the distance on a cart. i also drag pull half of body weight over 1 mile and do this about 3 times a week, also penty of road work with bike and on foot.

also what motivates a dog to pull heavy weights over a long distance? is it a desire to follow or please their owner? Is this enough to push a dog on, what more can be done to motivate a dog to go further especially at this time of year with the warmer weather? motivation is something i have touched on before.

Hello mate, IMO that's where training and the bond built between the dog and handler during training comes into it. Not pushing the dog too much until it's mentally ready and building its confidence in it's own abilities.

hello fella, how ya doing? i agree with all that but can you go beyond that, i understand that building a bond with your dog and encouraging him acts as a kind of turbo boost and i also believe that the slowly, slowly method is better but i just wish to know if there are ways of improving and getting more from your dog!!! i also dont believe you should push a dog until mentally ready!

if you really know your dog, you can tell how far to go....... in the beginning of the season i start building them up as if it was my self i only make them drag small weights. and when its starts getting easy ill ad a littel weight, i drag with 50% of the dogs bodyweight most of the time(in shape) , but with heavy drag around 80%
when the dog is fit an in god kondition it well work harder to pleace you my small dog startes barking out of joy when she see the harness she just loves working

hannemann I agree with you 100% on long dragging sessions! They're the best way to train a dog,to build strenght and stamina. I drag 2 times a week, then I do track time once over the wknds.Or if I can't go to my friends then drag 3 times. Both of my dogs drag more then their body weight(probably 130-150%),I use chains and window weights only. You can't beat the resistance, and it keeps the dog in a nice low pulling form.

i have used heavy chains in the past, i dont know what weight, i still have them and may use them again, i had about 10 long heavy chains for short pulls(30ft) and would use about three for long drag pull(1 mile). i then had a sledge made for me and found that the dogs couldn't pull no where near as much, maybe because the whole weight is in a smaller area and not spread out like long chains!!!

this is a question for both of you, when your dog is fully fit and pulling its top drag weight, do you pull for a mile?
